Recently the co-founders of the CDC Certified Divorce Coach® Training Program were interviewed by Michelle Meredith with NBC Channel 2 (WESH) TV News about what divorce coaching is and how the program came to be. The year was 2008, and the economy had tanked. Randy and Pegotty Cooper needed a new career. Pegotty was a life coach, and Randy was a mediator. There’s a coach for everything: sports, life, business/career … but at the time no one had ever heard of a divorce coach.
Randy and Pegotty brainstormed together, and it hit them that they could coach people during one of their most gut-wrenching times, divorce. They felt like there was a missing link in the complicated divorce puzzle, and they basically created a new profession.
Next thing they knew, they tapped into a new frontier to help people. “When we went through this, a light bulb went off, and I said, ‘We’ve got to do this,'” said Pegotty Cooper, a divorce coach.
There are professionals who coach you through your divorce, which — for anyone who has been through one knows — is heartbreaking and confusing.
What does a divorce coach do? Give people going through a divorce the time and space to cry, feel scared and angry, then help convert the tears into a plan that will affect the rest of their life. There are some common mistakes most people make when faced with divorce that a divorce coach can help guide their client through by being a non-judgmental thinking partner:
- A common mistake made is toxic talks with your soon-to-be ex. A solution is to change your language in a way that gets better results.
- Another mistake is wasting valuable time emotionally rehashing your story in the attorney’s office.
- And third, not having your act together and not being credible when it’s time to execute. Lay out your plan in an office, in court.
“We could be the bridge – we can pull out of them what are their priorities, what are their concerns,” Pegotty said. And the bridge has gone global. The Coopers now train people to be divorce coaches. There are close to 1,000 CDC Certified Divorce Coaches worldwide, including in Saudi Arabia.
Divorce marks the end of marriage, but not the end of your dreams. Divorce coaches say their goal is to get you to the other side of the divorce so you can continue to dream on.

Did you know that Divorce Coaching has been recognized since 2013 as a dispute resolution process which is compatible with any of the most common methods for reaching agreement with your spouse in the divorce process?
There are many imitators in divorce coach training, but none who actually offer a regulated certification like the CDC Board of Standards®! Come find out what makes us different!
