woman walking on a straight clear path

Throughout the divorce process, from the very beginning until the post-divorce work is complete, and a new chapter is underway, the certified divorce coach supports the client in making the best possible decisions every day.  Whether it is being the best parent they can be, being responsive to the requests for information made by those supporting the process or focusing on developing a new identity and new role as head of their own household, the client is not alone.

A divorce coach helps their client to see the real impact of their actions or decisions on other members of the family. The goal is to help them to step back and get in touch with who they are when they are at their best. Self-awareness is the first step towards emotional intelligence, and I think you will agree that the business of divorce could use a good dose of emotional intelligence! It’s a coach’s job to help the client step back and see if there is a different interpretation of the behavior they’re seeing their spouse exhibit.

Imagine sitting in front of a father who is now facing a divorce and is worried that he is going to lose connection with his children, that somehow he is going to be excluded from their life, even with a parenting plan in place. In his anxiety to want to see more of his children, he is causing his spouse a lot of anxiety and she then reacts negatively to him which only made him more panicked.

He then demands more time with his children outside of his appointed parenting times, which causes his former spouse to become reactive and aggressively protective of the children.

As a coach, you want to tell this poor distraught man sitting in front of you that his former spouse might be just as scared as he is that she’s going to lose the children. How do you turn it around and ask him, I wonder how she feels? Anxious? Upset? Concerned? Is she automatically pushing back?

“What can YOU do?”, you ask yourself.

Even if you recognize what this is, perhaps you feel deep compassion for both parties but don’t see a way out.

This is where one of the great benefits of the CDC Certified Divorce Coach® community comes into play.
